Synopsis: In 1985, Tae-Nam works as a teacher at an all girls high school in the country. The students there do not like him, because he keeps shouting at them. In fact, Tae-Nam has never had a date in his life. One day, he finds a banned erotic book at the book store. The novel, that spreads among the girls at the high school, ends with “to be continued.” The students become curious about the second volume. Soon-Duk decides to write the second volume for her friends.
Musings: Poor Tae Nam! A misunderstood nerd of a teacher that the girls hated for no reason I could see. This was a very good story about mistaken motivations and learning the true reasons of a person’s actions. Tae Nam was definitely ignored and picked on by his students. At first, you wonder if the nickname “pervert” is warranted; but as you continue to watch until the end, you realize that like the students you had the man all wrong.
The many faces of Tae Nam, played wonderfully by Lee Dong Hwi. This is only my second time ever seeing him, the first being in Joseon Gunman. I enjoyed his character thoroughly because he was misunderstood and still willing to do anything to protect a student during the years of book banning! The scenes as he imagined the characters in the erotic tale were pretty funny to say the least. I enjoyed his vivid imagination to the max!
It was also great to see Jung So Min once again as the super feisty and talented Soon Deok who makes it her mission to finish the little novelette and distributes it to all her friends, for a price! I missed her. Maybe I might finally break down and finish D-Day…..maybe.
Overall, the movie is a fun peek into the past and into life as it existed in South Korea in the 80s. Where books were banned and a government control was pretty scary. A good watch for a Sunday afternoon.
