Synopsis: Hong Gil-Dong (Lee Je-Hoon) runs an illegal detective agency with President Hwang (Go Ah Ra). They try to take down evil people following the will of President Hwang’s late father. Hong Gil-Dong is able to track virtually anyone down in an hour or less, except for Kim Byeong-Duk (Park Geun-Hyung) who has eluded him for many years. Kim Byeong-Duk is the man who killed Hong Gil-Dong’s mother. Hong Gil-Dong’s memory begins at the age of 8 when he was mother was killed.
Musings: Lee Je Hoon should have gotten double pay for this movie. Not only is he the main character but he does most of the voice-over. To warn you, this movie is filmed similar to Frank Miller’s Sin City, if you are familiar with that. A lot of scenes are green screen, the action is over the top and lots and lots and LOTS of violence! If you are old enough or privileged enough to have seen movies like Casablanca, Maltese Falcon; just about any of the detective movies from that early era, this is definitely for you!
The more you watch the movie, you pretty much figure out that maybe the harabeoji isn’t the one that Hong Gil Dong should truly be after. I liked the way the story was film and told, most of the time. But what I liked the most was the little girls.
Come for Le Je Hoon; stay for the little girls! I loved these two little girls, Dong Yi and Mal Soon as they followed him around in search for their grandfather. I especially loved when Mal Soon would catch him in a lie! Whether it was one he was telling her or someone else, she always made sure to correct him. The little girl’s were cute and so, so smart! Especially that Mal Soon! Watch how she saves Hong Gil Dong from the evil Kang Sung Il.
Stay for the action! The action scenes were over the top and Kang Sung Il was pure de-evil! His character reminded me of the sadistic Kevin played by Elijah Wood in Sin City. Kang Sung Il was one strange dude! Super strength and no human feelings what so ever! As usual with this type of movie, the thin line between good and evil is totally blurred; no obliterated!
Did I fail to mention that Go Ah Ra was in this? Well, she was. She served a purpose. That is all.. So, is the movie worth watching? I think so; however, there is a level of violence that is typical of this genre. And thumbs up for Kim Sung Kyun! He played a character that I thoroughly hated!!
