Evil Minds (2015)

Just so happened that my drama twinnie and I noticed it on the same day (that’s why we are twins) and both watched the first episode. She said watch it, I told her I was about to. Over a 3-4 day period, we had watched the entire drama, all 24 episodes and we were totally enthralled, immersed into the madness, and completely hooked! Read on…

My Thoughts
Nothing can prepare you for watching this drama. There are very few dramas that even can be in the same classification. From this moment on, I will think of dramas like Mozu and Siren that are the only ones that come close. This drama truly does represent a psychological drama. From the minute you meet Fang Mu, you realize his brilliance in deducting a crime scene and later the criminal behind it; however, as you continue to watch the episodes, you realize that there is a method in the madness and just how far down the proverbial “rabbit hole” that Fang Mu has sunken. What’s even more startling is the people behind the madness that we see further in later episodes.

Not very often that a writer can totally surprise me but Lei Mi, the writer managed to do that. As far as direction from the director, Zhang Kaizhou; again, we saw nothing but brilliance! Was Director Zhang going for the Chinese version of Sherlock? Maybe. But what he definitely did was dove into the darkness of the mind of the killer. Not only do we see the killers as they are but also we dive into the mind of the killer and how some can go so far as to manipulate a case to their satisfaction. The writer and director of this gem of a drama that a lot of people have probably never heard of, managed to scare the bejesus out of me! How? When you see the last remaining episodes and realize just who and how every player of the puzzle was being controlled, it really gives you pause.

Wang Long Zheng as Tai Wei Lian was impressive! This was my first time seeing him in anything and I’m looking forward to more in the future. The same with Chen Ruo-Xuan as Fang Mu. I felt he did a great job in showing us a character that truly was on the verge of madness.

One last thing. It’s amazing how much detail and stunning special effects and wonderful cinematography that was used to bring these popular online novels to the screen. No, this drama wasn’t on some major Chinese network but instead was only available via the web. I keep hearing how the drama has been banned and the plans of the 8 seasons may never come to fruition especially when there has been over 6 million views of the episodes on iqiyi website; however, make no mistake. If you are a lover of the crime/psychological genre, this is a must-see!!

Rating: 9.5/10
