Synopsis: By 2005, the North and South Korean governments have secretly joined forces to create a nuclear warhead; however when the leaders of both nations decide to hand over the nuke to the American military, North Korean officer Kang Min Gil goes rogue and steals the nuke along with nuclear physicist Kim Su Yeon. It’s up to South Korean Navy Officer Park Jeong U and a team of commandos to retrieve the scientist and the warhead, but during a heated firefight, the nuke, the scientist, and both groups of soldiers are swept up in the wake of a passing comet and dumped into the late 1500s — right in the middle of a battle between Korean peasants and marauding Chinese barbarians.
Musings: I admit. I laughed A LOT! I was really surprised how funny this movie was, it was totally expected! As I had just come back from a week vacation in the North Eastern part of the U.S., I really wanted something to watch that wouldn’t be too tiresome and I believe this was the perfect pick!
When the soldiers banded together so they could train the Admiral who was not the image that they thought of as the great Admiral of their historical past, it was fun watching them use all types of methods to get the man “in shape”. When the Admiral took their weapons and buried them (bad soldiers! Not watching your weapons), even I was scared as the little girl had watched him! I just knew this didn’t bode well for the future.
Even though my girl, Gong Hyo Jin is in the movie, she really is just an afterthought at the beginning but later has more scenes, especially with Park Jeong U. The movie spends time developing all of the soldiers as they try to blend into the time period. It is also interesting to see so many actors I recognize that are 10 years younger! This movie was released in July, 2005. But of course, they have made enemies in the form of the Chinese barbarians that are out to get them. The movie pretty much focuses on the men and their fight against the barbarians and their interactions with the future great Admiral. As you can expect, the final battle against the barbarians is AWESOME! Okay, and at times a little gruesome! But, overall, I recommend the movie. My only complaint is while the video quality is decent, the sound is almost inaudible!
