Synopsis: A moment of bad luck derailed Deok-kyu’s Olympic dreams and led him and his friends to jail. Jin-ho got out of jail quickly because of his rich parents, but Deok-kyu, Jae-seok, and Sang-hoon were not so lucky. So this group of middle-aged men who used to be called ‘legends’ during their teenage school days take part in a real action fighting TV program. The reality show will award the winner a prize of ₩20 million.
Musings: Well, this movie must come with a warning. As the title implies, there is a lot of fight scenes included. And let’s not forget the colorful language sprinkled throughout but if you can image a network actually broadcasting amateur night at the “Fight Club”, this is the general premise of the story as well as men looking to return to that time when they felt they ruled the streets. The story line basically takes you back and forth between the current characters in their middle ages to their lives when they were high school tough guys and in some case bullies.
Most of the characters were friends that basically lost track with each other. Lim Deok Kyu was just a noodle restaurant owner, once aspiring to be a professional boxer but that dream, dashed with his boxing match loss. The flash backs show you just how much that loss affected him. The adult Deok Kyu was constantly being approached by the PD Gyu-min, played by Lee Yo-won. Her role was definitely kind of cold blooded as she was going for the ratings and only saw the fighters as a ways to a means.
Great acting by both the older actors and the younger ones playing their former selves. I admit if you don’t like boxing, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) or the like, this is not a story for you. But if you enjoy the acting of Hwang Jung-min and Yoo Jun-sang, you will definitely enjoy this. I admit I never wanted to see bullying high school beat more; then I yelled “Grab that phone!”
