Okay, this is got to be a first! A first where I feel the need to tell everyone that I can about…wait for it….a romance/comedy drama! Why is this a surprise? Well, anyone who knows me should know I like NEVER get excited about a Rom/Com; so excited that I want to IMMEDIATELY write about it! If you aren’t watching this drama, you MUST add this to your PTW list. I’ve never laughed so hard before watching a Korean drama…EVER!!
Oh Jung Se as Oh Do Si
Ryu Hyun Kyung as Ryoo Doo Ri
Choi Yeo Jin as Choi Jin Nyeo
Jung Joon Young as Jeong Yeong Joon
Ha Eun Sul as Ha Seol Eun
Park Jong Hwan as Park Hwan Jong
Lee Jae Joon as Lee Joon Jae
Terada Takuya as Takuya
It’s an omnibus series about four different couples living together in one apartment complex.
Oh Do Si and Ryoo Doo Ri play the main couple in their 30s who chose to live together instead of getting married, and have been sharing an apartment for two years. Oh Do Si plays a voice actor and Ryoo Doo Ri plays a reviewer who runs a blog.
Choi Jin Nyeo and Jeong Yeong Joon are twelve years apart in age and have been living together for a year. He’s a pretty-boy singer who carries his guitar everywhere he goes, but doesn’t actually know how to play it all that well. She’s a penny-pinching ahjumma in the body of a hot woman who basically supports her much younger boyfriend. He drives her crazy but he’s a good guy at heart, and she can never manage to stay mad at him for long.
Ha Seol Eun and Park Hwan Jong play a 20s couple that just moved in together. She’s the type of woman who doesn’t want her boyfriend to know that she isn’t the perfect embodiment of femininity, and works tirelessly to keep up the illusion.
Lee Joon Jae plays a loner who prefers to stay at home, but is forced to get a roommate for financial reasons. He doesn’t even want to exchange unnecessary small talk with the guy, and thus seeks out a foreigner who can’t speak Korean very well. Takuya plays the new roommate, a young man from Japan who’s on a trip around the world. Takuya thinks it’s a shame that Lee Joon Jae is wasting his youth as a homebody, and begins to draw him out into the world.
It’s been a long time since I’ve watched a drama and within 10 minutes I am in love. Add to the fact that it is a romance/comedy just adds to the rarity this is for me. Within 10 minutes, I was laughing hard; within 20 minutes, I was nearly on the floor with tears in my eyes! Yes, this drama took me by surprise because it wasn’t what I expected. Everyone of these couples are special…okay, some more than others.
Do Si and his pursuit for a little nooky is just plain funny! Poor Doo Ri! Her constant attempts to get away from the amorous one was truly funny moments! The man couldn’t take no whatsoever. A quick and swift snatching of his groin cool him down fast and furious! After this few moments, I forgot I was watching a Korean drama!
However, there is nothing that could prepare you for couple #2, Jin Nyeo and Yeong Joon (yes, I caught the play on his real name!). As the noona (she’s 33) compared to his 21 years old, sometimes with these two, I felt like she was his babysitter! Yeong Joon was hilarious when he was calling her fat. Yes FAT! But then Jin Nyeo had a point when she said he was skinnier than her….HE IS!!
His attempt to write an apology letter/poem was cute in its execution but the words was seriously whack! And then to close all his writings with “The And”, yes we can only assume it was Yeong Joon’s sad attempts at English and writing “The End”. Is it just me or does Jeong Yeong Joon remind you of Kang Dong Won? Is it me?
Our next introduction is to Lee Jae-joon. What a slob! I thought I was bad, the boy has me beat for days! From answering the phone to swimming through the dirty clothes strewn throughout the house just to answer the door; just WOW!!
But adorable and dorky like Takuya is just too cute. As the traveling Japanese student who is passing through, he obviously doesn’t care as he immediately moves him; however, the funny thing, loner Jae-joon looking for a roommate for the cash but not having anywhere for poor Takuya to sleep! Shared abode anyone? This is definitely a bromance in the making!
This is one of the many scenes I liked. Du Ri’s born again, abstaining from sex younger brother comes bearing gifts of food for his sister and one day future brother in law. At first, he starts in on lecturing them for living in sin but he sure changes his tune when Do Shi gives him an envelope full of cash; cash he pilfered from Du Ri’s wallet!
But again, nothing could prepare us for Yeong Joon’s attempts to exercise and “beef” himself up! From treadmill to humping the floor! The boy had me laughing so hard! Like Jin Yeo, all I could do was stare in amazement and LMAO!! But the piece de resistance was when Jin Yeo realized he had on one of her bras…to catch his sweat! What a HOOT!!
If you thought the last scene was funny, nothing could prepare me for what followed with the discovery of the gift of assorted condoms from a fan! Just as Yeong Joon decides to get amorous, the lights go out in the building during a blackout. Jin Yeo starts yelling how she lost her earring, Yeong Joon doesn’t care but she does and wants to find it. What follows is a scene with “Glow in the Dark” condoms that I’m STILL reeling from. Wait, is this really Korean cable? Really? The scene was HILARIOUS!! Seriously folks! You have to see it to believe it!
The last couple introduced is the young loves; dated for one year, now living together for 17 days. As you can imagine, this is the time of discovery of what your partner has been hiding from you.
Seol Eun likes to eat and she has been effectively hiding this fact from poor Joon Jae; however, Joon Jae has noticed one thing; she gives him the vegetables while she eats all of the meat!
A great scene is whereby Seol Eun is sneaking a midnight snack of ramyeon after swearing to Joon Jae that she would give up her late night kitchen raids; but, a girl can’t help herself and we see Seol Eun doing what she said she wouldn’t. Just when she is about to get caught, she dives into her bowl trying to shield it. Poor Joon Jae thinks she is crying when her head is deep into the bowl and the ramyeon soup is flying all over the table! Just the thought of all of that hot ramyeon soup hitting her face is pretty funny by itself.
So, as you can see, the first episode is a great introduction to all of our resident couples. I can already see that Jin Yeo and Yeong Joon as well as Do Si and Do Ri will be my favorites. The budding bromance or where ever the writer plans on taking that will definitely be another couple to watch. Overall, it was an hour of fun, fun, fun and I cannot WAIT until the next episode!! The Lover is available on Viki and probably will show up on other streaming sites once the word gets out how funny it truly is….
