American Remake of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance?

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance Remake will be Produced by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura

A remake of director Park Chan Wook’s 2005 thriller Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is scheduled to begin production with Silver Reel, part of Lotus Entertainment, with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s of Di Bonaventura Pictures, and CJ Entertainment.

In 2010, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the screenplay to be rewritten for American audience by Brian Tucker (Broken City). The writer is still on board the project, but it is not known if Warner Bros. is still involved or not.

The original Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance followed a deaf-mute who gets robbed when trying to come up with money for his sister’s operation. The American version revolves around two grief-stricken men, both of whom have suffered recent losses in their life and are hell-bent on getting revenge. No production schedule was given.

A total surprise to me is that Oldboy, another movie in Park Chan-Wook’s Vengeance Trilogy, has been remade by none other than director Spike Lee (A Spike Lee Joint!!). This version will star Josh Brolin, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sharlto Copley and will be hitting theaters, October 11th.

Not to disparage US television but again, I’m always leery of remakes; sometimes they are good, but that is generally when you have never seen the original; however, Spike Lee’s OldBoy, I might make an exception. How about you?
